1st XI Carlton 8/272 defeated Footscray 8/228

On a cracking day to start the season Footscray won the toss and decided to send us in. Stepien and Gulbis opened the innings and a great opening stand of 77 ensued before Evan was dismissed for 29. Steppo and Harry Smyth combined to take the score to 101 before Steppo was dismissed for a slashing 57. Harry and Harvey then worked hard to take the momentum back from Footscray with a partnership of 94 before Macca was dismissed for a very important 35 when the score became 3/195. A small but important partnership with Nick Ross took the score to 4/236 but a couple of wickets to Footscray slowed the momentum to 6/248 before a vital partnership at the end between Harry and Xavier Crone took the score to 8/272. The highlight of the innings a dazzling 105no off 117 balls from Harry Smyth.

Aaron Smillie got us off to a great start when he picked up the opening bat with the score at 15 before a worrying partnership of 82.Tom Smyth with a caught and bowled put the brakes on to take the score to 2/97. The wheel looked to have turned the way of The Bulldogs before a dazzling spell of bowling from Eddy O’Sullivan who after taking the big wicket of Dean Russ with the score at 3/174 then proceeded to rip the heart out of the Bulldogs batting with another 4 wickets to leave them reeling on 7/192. Cam Stevenson then chipped in with the 8th wicket to cap of a great first up performance as Footscray finished 8/228. Highlight of the innings was undoubtedly Eddy’s maiden 5 wicket haul of 5/53.

2nd XI Carlton 9/264 lost to Footscray 267

The Bulldogs won the toss and decided to have a hit before Nathan Patrick broke through for his maiden blues wicket with the score on 30. He proceeded to quickly taken his second before a partnership ensued. Jack O’Shea broke the partnership to leave Footscray 3/97 but runs were flowing regularly before Nathan took his third to take the score to 4/151. Footscray kept building the momentum before 2 wickets to Charlie Ross, 1 to debutant Kyle Scheepers and a run out by Pelly saw the Bulldogs 8/257. Then the destroyer big Nafe came on to take his fourth wicket and end with 4/42 Charlie Ross then took the last to finish a fine spell with the vey tidy figures of 3/46 and we were chasing 267. A great keeping performance by Lachie McKenna who took 5 catches.

Donovan Pell and Lachie McKenna opened the innings before Pelly was dismissed with the score on 28. A brilliant 147 partnership between Lachie and Jack O’Shea took the score to 175 before we lost our second wicket when Jack was dismissed for a vital 60. Brayden McGregor making his debut for the blues put on a quick 48 run partnership with Lachie who was run out in a mix up for a brilliant 116 off 125 balls with the score 3/223. A procession of wickets then saw us slump to 9/257 and 10 needed off the last two balls. The bowler then proceeded to bowl a wide and then Matt Culvenor belted a six to leave us requiring 4 off the last ball. Culv then hit a single off the last and we went down by 3 runs. It was a game that we had won and lost many times and will go down as a missed opportunity.
